How to Clean Windows Without Streaks (Inside and Outside)

how to clean streak free windows

Cleaning windows without streaks is mostly a technique problem, not a product problem. Most people clean windows in direct sunlight, use too much, wipe with the wrong material, or forget to clean the frames and tracks before the glass. In professional house cleaning services in North York homes, hard water from the municipal supply also leaves mineral deposits on windows that do not come off with regular glass cleaner. This guide covers both the interior and exterior techniques, what to use, and how to deal with hard water spots that have been building up since last spring.

May is window washing season in Ontario. The grey winter is over, screens need reinstalling, and the accumulated grime from months of condensation and dust is visible on every pane. Getting the technique right the first time saves doing them twice.

The Right Tools Make All The Difference

Tool Best for Health Canada’s consumer product safety guidelines for household cleaning products risk Notes
Squeegee Large interior and exterior panes Very low when used correctly Professional standard; wipe blade after each stroke
Microfibre cloth Finishing and detail work Low with quality cloth Use a separate dry cloth to buff after washing
Newspaper Light cleaning and polishing Low Works due to carbon ink but less practical than microfibre
Paper towel Not recommended High Leaves lint and fibres on glass surface

What to Use as a Cleaning Solution

A few drops of dish soap in warm water is the simplest and most effective window cleaning solution for most situations. Use very little soap, too much creates excessive suds that leave residue. A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and distilled water is a popular alternative and works well but vinegar has an odour and should be rinsed if used near aluminum frames.

Commercial glass cleaners (Windex and equivalents) work fine for interior windows but tend to leave streaks on exterior glass with heavy soiling because they are not designed for that level of grime. For exterior windows, the soap and water solution or a dedicated exterior window cleaner works better.

PRO TIP

Never clean windows in direct sunlight or on a hot day. The solution dries before you can wipe it off and leaves exactly the streaks you are trying to avoid. Clean on an overcast day or work on the shaded side of the house first. This is the single change that eliminates most window cleaning frustration.

Interior Windows: The Right Technique

Start by wiping the window frame and sill with a damp cloth to remove dust and loose debris before touching the glass. This prevents dragging grit across the pane.

Apply your cleaning solution with a microfibre cloth or sponge applicator. Work the solution across the entire pane. Then draw the squeegee across in overlapping horizontal strokes from top to bottom, wiping the blade on a dry cloth after each stroke. Finish by wiping the edges where the squeegee does not reach with a dry microfibre cloth.

For smaller windows without a squeegee, use the two-cloth method: one damp cloth to clean, one dry microfibre to immediately buff dry in circular motions.

Exterior Windows: What is Different

Exterior glass has more soiling: bird droppings, pollen, rain residue, and, in GTA properties near roads, exhaust film. Rinse the glass first with a garden hose to remove loose debris. Then apply your cleaning solution and scrub with a soft brush or sponge applicator before squeegeeing. Rinsing first significantly reduces how much grime you drag across the glass with your cleaning tool.

DID YOU KNOW

Hard water in parts of the GTA and especially in newer suburban developments in Brampton and professional house cleaning services in Mississauga leaves calcium deposits on exterior windows that regular glass cleaner cannot remove. These are the white hazy spots that persist after cleaning. A CLR solution or a diluted citric acid spray applied and rinsed off dissolves the mineral deposits before cleaning the glass normally.

Window Tracks and Frames

Window tracks are the most neglected part of window cleaning and the most visually obvious when filthy. Vacuum the track channel first to remove the bulk of the debris and dead insects. Then apply a baking soda and water paste, let it sit, and scrub with a stiff toothbrush or track brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Frames can be wiped with an all-purpose cleaner and a microfibre cloth.

PEOPLE ALSO ASK

How often should I clean windows? Interior windows in most GTA homes need cleaning two to four times per year. Exterior windows at least twice a year, ideally in spring after winter grime and in fall before the windows close for winter. Homes near busy roads or with pets who press against windows may need more frequent attention.

FAQs

Why do my windows streak even after I clean them?

The most common causes are: cleaning in direct sunlight (solution dries before you wipe it), using too much soap (leaves residue), using paper towels (leave fibres), dirty cleaning cloths, or not buffing dry after washing. The fix is usually to clean on a cloudy day, use minimal soap, and buff with a clean dry microfibre cloth immediately after.

What is the best homemade window cleaner?

A few drops of dish soap in warm water is the simplest and most effective. For a spray version, mix one cup of water, one cup of rubbing alcohol, and one tablespoon of white vinegar in a spray bottle. This evaporates quickly and leaves little residue.

How do I remove bird droppings from windows?

Soften dried droppings by covering with a wet cloth for a few minutes before attempting to remove them. Once softened, they wipe off easily. Do not scrape dried droppings on glass with a hard object as it can scratch. A plastic scraper or fingernail wrapped in cloth is safer.

Can I use a pressure washer to clean exterior windows?

High-pressure washing can crack window seals and caulking around frames and is generally not recommended for windows themselves. A garden hose on a normal setting is enough to rinse exterior glass before cleaning. A low-pressure setting on a pressure washer (at a safe distance) is occasionally used for ground-floor exterior frames, but not the glass itself.

How do I clean windows on upper floors safely?

For second-floor interior windows, most people can reach from a step ladder. For exterior upper-floor windows, a telescoping squeegee and applicator with an extension pole handles most situations without needing to be on a ladder. For very high or hard-to-reach windows, a professional window cleaning service is the safest option.
